According to the Australian government, there will be changes in the work restrictions for student visa holders in Australia from July 2023.

During the Corona pandemic, a relaxation was given to international students on their working hour cap due to the workforce shortage.

Later in January 2022, that relaxation was removed, and study visa holders (primary and secondary student visa holders) were allowed to work only 40 hours per two weeks (fortnight).

But from 1 July 2023, work restrictions for student visa holders will be changed, which we will discuss below in detail.

Changes In Work Restrictions For Student Visa Holders In Australia

International students will be allowed to work 48 hours per fortnight (two weeks) from 1 July 2023. Currently, the working limit is 40 hours per fortnight for international students.

These new changes in working hours will occur from 1 July 2023 and help students manage their expenses while studying in Australia.

These new restrictions ensure that international students can focus on their studies to get quality education, gain work experience, and contribute to solving the workforce shortage problem in Australia.

There is additional information for international students that international students must still,

  • Maintain their course enrolment.
  • Ensure satisfactory course attendance.
  • Ensure satisfactory course progress.

Two-Year Extension Of Post-Study Work Rights

There will also be an extension in the post-study working rights for international students with degrees in the workforce shortage areas.

From 1 July 2023, there will be a two years extension on the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) for international higher education graduates.

The Australian government has issued a list of occupations and qualifications that are eligible for work rights extension.

They are targeting the fields Australia requires the most. That includes,

  • Health
  • Teaching
  • Engineering
  • Agricultural Fields

The work permit will be increased by two years from 1 July 2023. This will increase the post-study rights from,

  • 2 to 4 years for selected Bachelor’s degrees.
  • 3 to 5 years for selected Master’s degrees.
  • 4 to 6 years for all the doctoral degrees.

The graduates who have Temporary Graduate Visa on 1 July 2023 or those who apply for Temporary Graduate Visa after 1 July 2023 will be eligible.

Students whose visa expires before 1 July 2023 can apply for the extension by visiting the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408).
