The Canadian immigration authorities give the green light to a new language test for economic immigration purposes.
A new test known as the Pearson PTE essential test will join the IELTS and CELPIP tests. The IELTS and CELPIP tests are already accepted for Canada PR (permanent residency) via federal Express Entry-linked programs. Now PTE essential test will also be accepted for this purpose.
PTE Essential Test – Canada Immigration Approves New Language Test
The PTE essential test is the latest version of the PTE test or Pearson test of the English Language. This test is quite similar to the PTE academics.
The major difference between both tests is that PTE Essential is more vocational, real-life, and has a non-academic focus, which meets all the basic IRCC requirements for language proficiency.
As four essential skills in the English language are required by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. That is:
- Speaking
- Reading
- Listening
- Writing
PTE essential will check all these skills of the candidates.
According to a press release by Pearson on 2nd February 2023, the test will be started by the end of 2023 for Canadian Economic Immigration.
The IRCC recently announced that they are ready to welcome a record number of people as permanent residents in the upcoming years. Approximately 1.45 million permanent residents will be welcomed in the upcoming 3 years.

So this announcement has come at the right time and will benefit Pearson too.
The PTE test is already applicable for all visa applications in some major countries like New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.
According to the PTE, the PTE exam is accepted by 100% of universities in Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia; also, around 99% of universities in the UK and 90% of universities in Canada accepts the PTE academic test.

This is a fully digital test, which is delivered by using Pearson VUE. In this test, updated AI technology is used for the scoring system.
With the help of improved technology, biometric data is collected for security purposes. Voice recognition is collected for the speaking section of the test.
