PTE Speaking Format

Before I give you some tips on how to improve fluency in PTE speaking, let us first understand the structure of the PTE speaking section. The PTE speaking section is combined with the writing section.

The exam’s speaking and writing section is 54 – 67 minutes. This section is also the longest of all sections and contains seven different types of questions that I mentioned above. This section will evaluate you based on your speaking and writing skills.

In this section, the first question will be an introduction. You won’t get any marks for this question. This question is only to help you get familiarized with the technology. In this question, the technology will identify your accent for the upcoming questions.

After this question, the original test starts based on which your speaking and writing are evaluated.

Tips On How To Improve Fluency In PTE Speaking

Now that you are clear with the format of the speaking section of the PTE exam, let us look at some practical tips which will help you to improve your fluency.

how to improve fluency in PTE speaking

Get A Conversation Partner

The first practical tip for how to improve fluency in PTE speaking is to get a conversation partner. If you are attending any coaching classes you can ask a friend there to talk to you in English all the time.

If you are preparing from home, then find a friend whom you talk to daily and try to talk to them in English. Make sure that you talk personally (face-to-face) and not virtually as to build your fluency.

Many times we have a good grip on the language, but as we do not speak English daily, we are not able to remember all the right words for the exam. Thus talking to a person daily in English will train your brain to think in English and speak in English fluently.

Build Your Vocabulary

Not having enough vocabulary is one of the main reasons why most students cannot speak English fluently. They tend to complain that they do not remember the right word at the right time, and then they fumble and lose confidence.

The only way you can avoid this is by building your vocabulary. This will also help you to improve the quality of your answers in the writing section and your understanding in the listening section.

You can improve your vocabulary by reading some books dedicated to PTE vocabulary or by referring to websites that daily release some words with their meaning. When you are using new words, make sure that you use these words only if you know their correct meaning and usage.

One thing that you can do while speaking to your English partner daily is if you notice that you are using the same word many times, then go to the internet and find a synonym to that word and look if you can use that synonym.

Another thing you can do to increase your vocabulary is that when you are unable to find a word while trying to describe something to your partner, do not stop speaking in English, try to describe that thing elaborately as it may be possible that your partner know the word you are lacking and he/she tells you the word.

Use English Every Day

We saw that it is important to talk to a partner in English every day and use good vocabulary, in the same way, it is also important to use English every day.

You should not only use English while talking to other but also you should think in English and talk to yourself in English by seeing in the mirror.

The main hurdle in how to improve fluency in PTE speaking is that we do not think in English while we are talking.

As English is not our first language, our brain tends to think first in our mother tongue, and then we translate it into English and then speak, which takes a lot of time and thus reduces fluency. Thus, you need to train your brain to think in English to improve your fluency.

Listen To People Talking In English

When it comes to how to improve fluency in PTE speaking, one important task is also to listen to the people around you speaking in English.

To get a better understanding, you can even listen more to people from the country you are aspiring to move to. For example, if you are going to the UK (United Kingdom), then try to find some shows from the UK or listen to the radio of that country.

When you are hearing them speak, do not take your attention to what they are saying; start to analyze and understand what they are saying.

Many students tend to get concerned with getting their grammar right so much so that they forget that English is not just a set of rules, but it is a language, and it has rhythms, tones, and patterns.

When you listen to people talking, try to identify these patterns and try to implement them in your speech.

It is also very much important to mimic the native accent and tone of the people of the country you are aspiring to go in as at first, you won’t understand why the people are saying what they are saying, but as you mimic them and use their tone and patterns in your day-to-day life, you will start getting a clear idea.

Confidence

All of the tips given above are important and practical to use, but all of these tips are of no use without your confidence. You need to be confident to speak fluently.

This is the most important part of how to improve fluency in PTE speaking. You do not need to know every hard word in English, and nor do you need to speak a sophisticated language; just communicating efficiently in English with confidence is enough.

If you are confident about yourself, you are already half done with getting the best score.

Avoid Using Fillers

Most of the time in our daily life we use fillers like um, uh, oh, er, and ah, without getting noticed, but the PTE assessment system will not ignore or overlook it.

If the PTE assessment system found you using fillers in the speaking section then you may lose marks for fluency.

To know you do you use fillers while speaking, you can record yourself while speaking and you can listen to your recording to identify whether you use fillers or not.

To avoid using fillers and stumbling, you must control yourself and be attentive while speaking. Record yourself for a minimum of 7 days continuously, listen to yourself, and check whether there is an improvement in your speaking.

If there is improvement then it is good if there is not then you may need your way of practicing.

The maximum number of times students can avoid the usage of fillers in their speaking with concentration and daily practice.
