US Announces New Guidelines for Indians Seeking Student Visas: Those who recently renewed their passport or obtained a new one as a result of losing or having their old passport stolen may proceed with their appointment if they can provide a photocopy or other proof of their previous passport number.

The purpose of this step is to improve security against fraudulent activity and guarantee the integrity of the visa application process.

US Announces New Guidelines for Indians Seeking Student Visas

The United States has announced a new policy that will take effect on November 27 in an effort to curb fraud and misuse of the appointment system.

This policy change requires all applicants for F, M, and J student visas to include their own passport information when setting up their profile and booking their visa appointment.

At the Visa Application Centers (VAC), people who create a profile or schedule an appointment using a false passport number will not be accepted. In return, the US Embassy in India said, “The appointments of applicants will be canceled, and the visa fee will also be forfeited”.

Candidates in this circumstance need to make amends. They have two options for creating a new profile with the relevant passport details or accessing an already-existing profile with the right information to make an appointment.

It is important to note that a fresh receipt for the visa fee needs to be produced if the previous one is associated with a profile that contains false passport information.

Moreover, the United States announced a significant rise, for the third year in a row, in the number of Indian students choosing to pursue higher education in the nation.

According to the Open Doors Report (ODR), there was a 35% increase in the number of Indian overseas students enrolling at US universities, setting a record-breaking enrollment of 2,68,923 students for the 2022–2023 academic year.

A record number of student visas were issued by the US Embassy and Consulates in India in June–August 2023, during the main student visa season. An astounding 95,269 visas in the F, M, and J categories were issued by consular authorities, a rise of 18% over the same period in 2022. The increase in student visa applications highlights how eager Indian students are to explore educational options in the US.
