However, a British official has indicated that any changes to visa requirements would be limited, as immigration is a highly sensitive political topic in the UK.
The UK has so far refused to make any concessions to its visa and immigration rules under the FTA with India.
India has long pushed for greater access for its citizens. Still, the UK’s vote for Brexit in 2016 was partly driven by calls for tighter control over immigration numbers, which continues to be a contentious issue ahead of the next general election.
Talks between India and the UK stalled last year over easier access to skilled workers, with India raising concerns over UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comments on Indian migration.
In response, Indian officials have called on the UK government to share data on the number of Indian business visitors who have overstayed in the UK.
Despite the difficulties posed by high levels of net migration and visa applications, the UK is considering time-limited business visas for highly skilled workers.
In recent months, the United Kingdom has implemented various measures to reduce immigration to the country and has also restricted the opportunities for current immigrants to stay in the UK.
