Students must follow a specific process to get their Canada study visa, and most of the study visas are processed within the 60-day service standard.
Canada introduced the (SDS) Student Direct Stream Program in 2018. Under this program, the applicants must complete particular eligibility criteria, including language proficiency and financial requirements.
SDS is a study visa for the application process for some selected countries, and India is one of them.
In 2020, the Canadian government provided additional support for international students starting new online programs. It was in response to issues raised by Canadian institutions about program payment and student enrollment.
In 2021, temporary measures were introduced due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. It included a two-stage approval process for international students who could not provide the necessary documents but were pursuing distance learning programs.
After initial approval, students can count online study time abroad towards their post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if they complete all requirements.
Apart from these changes, the IRCC plans to introduce a new institution framework by 2024 in its student permit program.
This new framework aims to modernize the (ISP) International Student Program managed by IRCC. It also evaluates the post-secondary institutions based on compliance monitoring, sustainable intake, safety, identification of genuine students, and overall quality of international student experience.
Generic Checklist For Study Permit Application
IRCC issued a generic checklist for international students regarding their application for a study permit, which includes some of the following points.
- This checklist should be used with the Document Checklist for a Study Permit for IMM 5483.
- A certified translation must accompany any document not in English or French. If you did not submit all the required documents, it may result in delayed processing or refusal.
- Wrong submissions and statements of fraudulent documents will also result in refusal.
- You may need to attend an interview.
- A medical examination is needed for study programs lasting more than six months. Study visa applicants can undergo medical exams in advance, per the instructions below.
- You must submit your application three months before your intended travel date. Applications received after 01 April for May entry, after 01 August for September entry, and after 01 December for January entry will not be processed in time for the start of classes and may be denied.
- You must include the barcode page when submitting your signed and completed application form.
- Accompanying children and spouses of all ages must submit their own application forms.
