New Immigration Law Of Germany Aimed At Attracting Skilled Workers Takes Effect In November:  In June of this year, the German parliament passed a new immigration law. 

This law aimed at attracting skilled workers to the country. Due to an exceptional labor shortage, a part of this new law is set to take effect in November.

Following the approval, the authorities declared that this new law will be implemented in three stages, scheduled for November 2023, March 2024, and June 2024. 

The changes are focused on bringing in non-academic skilled workers from non-EU countries. 

The law involves a points-based system that reduces entry barriers for applicants based on language proficiency, professional qualifications, and age. 

The center-left SPD, the liberal FDP, and the Greens championed the law, which garnered 388 yes votes, 234 no votes, and 31 abstentions. 

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser presented the government’s plan in the chamber and stated that it would only be successful if bureaucratic obstacles were removed during implementation. 

The skilled labor shortage is a significant obstacle to economic growth in Germany. Skilled workers are missing everywhere.” Faeser said. She described the legislation as “a massive step for the future of our country.

Germany also plans to introduce an “opportunity card” for individuals to address the migrant shortage. This card will allow foreigners without a predetermined job to come to Germany for one year to seek employment. 

To be eligible for the opportunity card, applicants must have a vocational qualification or university degree. 

The opportunity cards will be allocated based on specific criteria. Points will be earned by fulfilling these criteria.

The specific criteria for earning points include:

  • Language proficiency.
  • Established connections to Germany.
  • The possibility of bringing a life partner or spouse to the German labor market.
