Indian Medical Graduates Can Now Practice In Abroad: Students who have graduated from Indian medical colleges or schools can now practice in foreign countries.
India’s NMC (National Medical Commission) has received the Recognition status of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) for around ten years. This latest recognition has profound implications for Indian medical graduates.
Indian Medical Graduates Can Now Practice In Abroad
According to the Union Health Ministry press release, it opens the door for medical graduates to pursue their medical practice and postgraduate training in the countries that require WFME recognition, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Under this accreditation, around 706 Indian medical colleges will gain the accreditation status of WFME. Also, any new medical colleges that are established in the next few years will automatically receive the accreditation status of WFME.
India’s globally recognized standards in medical education are set to make it an attractive destination for international students.
The National Medical Commission’s attainment of WFME recognition facilitates international mobility for medical professionals and promises to improve the quality and standards of medical education in India.
This achievement also aligns Indian medical education with global best benchmarks and practices.
This recognition is expected to boost the reputation and international standing of Indian medical schools, colleges, and healthcare professionals.
The initiative aims to promote collaboration and innovation in medical education while cultivating a culture of quality assurance among educators and institutions.
The WFME, which means the World Federation for Medical Education, is a global organization committed to improving the quality of medical education around the globe.
The mission of this organization is to improve healthcare for everyone. Their main goal is to encourage medical education’s highest ethical and scientific standards.
The press release also highlighted the importance of the Education Commission on Foreign Medical Education (ECFMG) in the United States. ECFMG is responsible for overseeing policies and regulations related to licensing International Medical Graduates (IMGs).
IMGs need to be certified by ECFMG to be eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs) and apply for medical residencies in the United States.
ECFMG introduced a new requirement for individuals in 2010, set to take effect in 2024 (initially planned for 2023 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
This requirement states that starting in 2024, applicants for ECFMG Certification must have graduated from medical schools officially accredited by an agency recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
The fees for the WFME recognition process involve around $60,000 (Rs 4,98,5142) per medical college, which covers the cost of the site visit team, including their accommodation and travel.
In India, there are 706 medical colleges considered, and the total cost for them to seek WFME recognition involves around $4,23,60,000 (Rs 351.9 crore). Also, this recognition process applies to all the Indian medical colleges under the purview of NMC.
This achievement is a practical step forward for Indian medical education, providing more opportunities for graduates to practice abroad and improving the overall quality of healthcare education in the country.
So, it is all about Indian medical graduates can now practice in abroad.
