Ashley was accepted into Scarborough’s Pures College of Technology, associated with Northern College, Toronto, to pursue a healthcare administration course. She found a place to live in the Greater Toronto Area and obtained her admission acceptance letter in February of this year.
In an email to CBC, Pures College stated that they were willing and able to welcome all international students who had been accepted. Still, their affiliate, Northern College, decided not to proceed.
Pures clarified that they do not have the final say in the admissions procedure as a private college in partnership with a public college.
According to CBC News, David Francis, the director of strategic initiatives for Northern College, stated that the school must predict the number of visas granted before each semester.
As a result, the college sends out more acceptance letters than the available space, assuming that some applicants will not receive visas.
Also, Francis noted that many students apply to multiple schools, and the college expects that some of its accepted students will choose to attend other institutions.
CBC News contacted IRCC regarding the situation, and they expressed disappointment in how Northern College handled the problem. However, the IRCC stated that they need the authority to oversee acceptance letters for individual institutions.
Pures College has announced that it will work alongside its counterpart and students to resolve the issue. Francis, a representative from the college, stated that affected students would receive refunds or be transferred to other schools.
Francis emphasized that the college is prepared to help students individually. Students who have already arrived in Canada will be given priority assistance.
International students are permitted to study in Canada based on their acceptance letters, which they must present to immigration authorities upon arrival.
Jaspreet Singh, president of the International Sikh Student Association and a member of the World Sikh Organization, believes that incidents like these reveal a larger problem.
Singh argues that the system is taking advantage of students and that similar situations are not uncommon in Canada. He told CBC News that this is happening each year and every semester.
Alpha College of Business and Technology, Toronto, suspended students’ enrollment last year, marking the last time a Canadian college took similar action.
