Canada has welcomed India’s recent decision to resume some visa services, saying this significant move was a good sign after a tense time for many Canadian citizens amid a diplomatic row over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India’s high commission in Canada said on 25 October that the nation’s officials will resume processing some types of visa applications for Canadians applying from across the country as well as abroad.
The decision came a month after New Delhi temporarily suspended all types of visa services in Canada and for Canadian residents across the world.
The tension flared between the two countries last month following the Canadian Prime Minister’s allegations of the potential involvement of Indian agents in the Killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Khalistani extremist, on 18 June.
On Wednesday afternoon, Marc Miller, the Immigration Minister, Called India’s latest move a good sign after an anxious time for his many Canadians.
Harjit Sajjan, Emergency Preparedness Minister, who is also Sikh, said that the resumption of some types of visa processing is good news but wouldn’t guess what message New Delhi is trying to send.
Sajjan told reporters that it is good to see that India has resumed the visa services. It would have been nice (if) they had not taken it in the first place.
India has formally requested that Canada improve its duty to protect foreign ambassadors. India had also asked Canada to come down on anti-India elements and terrorists operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians.
