Canada Signs New Youth Mobility Agreement With The United Kingdom
On Thursday, 14th of July, Sean Fraser, Immigration Minister of Canada, and Robert Jenrick, Immigration Minister of the UK, signed a new Canada-United Kingdom (UK) Youth Mobility Arrangement.
Canada and the UK plan to take effect in 2024, and this new agreement contains many improvements to the current youth mobility agreement between the two countries:
- The age of eligibility is increased to 18-35
- The two new streams added for UK residents moving to Canada
- an expansion in the visa duration to 3 years
Through UK’s Youth Mobility Scheme and International Experience Canada (IEC), more British and Canadian young people can work in each other’s country for extended periods.
This recent agreement is available for those ages 18 to 30, and the visa is two years. The youth mobility agreement launched in 2008 aims to promote each country’s reciprocal work opportunities.
The Canadian government’s (IEC) International Experience Canada program operates the Youth mobility agreements. IEC is a program that allows young individuals from Canada and other nations to visit and work in each other’s countries. IEC offers three categories:
- Working Holiday Visa: This program provides an open work visa that allows participants to work anywhere in the host country to fund their trips.
- International Co-op (internship): This program offers a work permit for specific employers, allowing participants to gain experience in their field of study.
- Young Professionals: This program offers an employer-specific work permit that allows participants to engage in professional work related to their field of study or career goals.
An international youth movement allows young individuals to learn about new countries, languages, and societies while enhancing their life skills and future job prospects.
Canada has established youth movement agreements with 37 countries and foreign territories and aims to invite nearly 90,000 young people from these partner regions for the 2023 season.
The Canadian government hopes that this initiative, known as IEC, will help alleviate the country’s labor shortages. Since 2008, over 240,000 Canadians have participated in IEC.
In 2023, invitations to apply for an open work permit under the Working Holiday category were extended to 10,845 British citizens. This growth is expected to benefit Canadian businesses by enabling them to fill skill gaps and reduce wage disparities nationwide.
