Canada Is Planning To Cap International Students Due To Housing Shortage Worsens: On Monday, the new Housing Minister, Sean Fraser, announced that the Canadian government might consider a cap on foreign student visas due to the increasing cost of housing and pressure from the public.

The number of these visas has significantly increased in recent years. According to the official data, more than 800,000 international students will have active visas in 2022, up from 275,000 in 2012.

Also, Canada has become increasingly popular among international students in the past decade due to its relaxed immigration policies and simplified work permit process.

Fraser, who previously served as immigration minister and recently started his new position, expressed concern over the significant increase in the number of students, creating significant pressure on certain housing markets.

When asked about limiting the number of international students, he replied, “I believe that is one of the options we must consider.” But, the Canadian government has not yet decided on the matter.

During a cabinet retreat in Prince Edward Island, Fraser informed journalists that the temporary immigration programs were not created to handle the sudden increase in numbers.

The Conservative Party, currently leading in the polls for the upcoming federal election, believes that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is not taking sufficient action to address the housing problem.

With a population of approximately 39.5 million, Canada plans to welcome a record-breaking 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025. According to Fraser, limiting the number of newcomers is not the solution.
