The Honorable Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser, announced a new work visa stream to allow 10,000 H1B visa holders in the United States to come and work in Canada. This move will give help thousands of Indian tech professionals.
After announcing, Canada hopes to become a global leader in diverse emerging technologies and attract some specialists impacted by the tech giants in the US.

Sean Fraser said on Tuesday, by 16 July, we will create a work-permit stream for American H1B holders to come to Canada for work. In its news, the Minister also said that this program would provide work or study visas for their spouses and dependents.
He also mentioned that we are excited regarding the purposes we have set in immigration because they are not only numbers — they are strategic. With the first-ever immigration Tech Talent Strategy in Canada, we also target newcomers that are experts and help to enshrine Canada as a leader in diverse emerging technologies.
The press release said that all the authorized applicants for this new stream would receive an open work visa for upto 3-years, meaning they could work anywhere in Canada for almost any employer. Also, their family members and spouse can apply for a temporary resident visa with a study or work visa, as required.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that many tech companies went on hiring during the pandemic but have begun spreading individuals off in big numbers. That’s left many H1B visa holders running to see new employment before they are forced to leave the US.
Thousands of skilled foreign workers, including Indian workers in the US, have lost their jobs due to current releases at companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. US media reports show almost 2,00,000 IT employees have been laid off since November last year.
Insiders of the industry say that 30 to 40% of workers are Indian IT professionals, a substantial number of whom are on L1 and H1B visas. The US Government annually issues 65,000 H-1B visas, which last for 3-year and can be renewed for another three years.
According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Of the H1B requisitions authorized in FY 2022, 72.6% were for heirs whose country of birth was India. In the last year, around 74.1% of skilled employees from India obtained H1B permits of the total authorized in FY 2021.
